Are You Teaching Your Child to Understand?
This is a very important idea. Are you teaching your child to understand? Or are you teaching them to memorize, retain information because they have to learn it.
Teaching for understanding is the foundation of education. Students don’t go to school because it is an escape for parents but because the information they are learning is reality. We need to bring teaching back to the process of how we do it, not the product.
I know this is such a contradiction to testing, testing, testing, that is going on in schools. Teaching should not be done because the child needs to learn it by the next state assessment.
Though we do have guidelines to follow, can’t we wrap our lessons around creative and interesting ways for the child? This is how we know students learn-so why aren’t we teaching our children this way?
It does take time and effort on our part, but as advocates this is our mission.
