Gifted Children Have Special Needs Too
When most think of the term “special needs” they think learning delays, behavior issues, or physical disabilities. The important idea to remember is that gifted children have their own set of special needs.
Many gifted children do not get the attention they need (and deserve) and are not being challenged to discover their true potential.
An article I previously read, suggests many recommendations and accommodations for gifted students. The following are some important things to keep in mind:
- No two gifted children are the same. Developmentally appropriate practices need to be planned for each individual child
- Even though the children are “gifted”, they are still children. They might have strengths in one area, but lack in another. Keep in mind the whole child when planning activities and challenges
- Do not alienate children from their peers. This may make them feel like outsiders in the classroom
Do not press academics on children. Instead, follow a child’s interests and questions as they acquire them.
Be supportive.
Be encouraging.
